How does 3D rendering work?

In just a few steps to a perfect product image

Many companies use CAD software systems (computer-aided design) in product development and use them to create "digital twins" of their products.
CAD files created in this way can not only be used for design and production processes, but can also be converted into photorealistic product visualizations for marketing purposes in just a few steps. Here's how it works.

01

Just bits and bytes

Digital CAD files are ideal for marketing purposes as they contain relevant product information: size, shape, button placement and lettering. This information can be saved in the universal STEP format and easily sent by email or Dropbox for further processing.

Advantage: The 3D designer can start the project within minutes after receiving the STEP file.

02

Import into 3D software

The CAD data provided is now imported into 3D visualization software for processing. Volumes and areas are generated from parametric bits and bytes, making the shapes of the product visible.

Advantage: Of the3D Designer can evaluate whether the level of detail in the source file is sufficient for a photorealistic rendering or whether further post-processing is necessary.

03

Assign materials and details

In this step, the surfaces are assigned their Shader , ie the texture of the real materials is simulated. Whether metal, wood, plastic or glass - any material can be created according to customer requirements. In order to work as accurately as possible, some example photos of the desired surfaces are required in this step.

Advantage: The color and texture of the surfaces can be changed at any time - even later. In this way, a large number of product variants can be simulated.

04

Lighting and virtual studio

In the final step before rendering, the virtual light sources are positioned so that your product is perfectly illuminated and the details come into their own.

Advantage: Depending on the intended use, the background can also be adjusted: white for typical catalog images; a large number of virtual studios are used for emotional product shots.
